I remember my first car. When I was about 15 and a half I started calling around in the local papers for cars for sale. It was 1979 and I really wanted a ’57 Chevy. They were mentioned in classic rock songs and always featured a cool guy. So I wanted a ’57 Chevy when I was 15 years old. I saw a car in the rural PennySaver, it advertised a, “Rocket 88” or “’57 Rocket 88.” I didn’t know what that was but it sounded good. When my Dad called from work, I asked him about it.”Hey Dad what’s a ’57 Rocket 88?” All my Dad replied was, “Wow that’s a good one.” I think he was as excited as I was about the car. A ’57 Chevy was selling for about $2,500 in kind of rough condition, but the Oldsmobile ’57 rocket 88 was selling for $1,200 and it was in perfect condition with 88,000 original miles. My Mom and Dad took me to test drive the car, my Dad actually test drove it because I didn’t have a license yet. He and I both loved it, and as usual, Mom didn’t like anything.
We got the car, and it was a great car for 16 year old to tear ass around the neighborhood in.
